U.S. Marine Corps World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Joseph Jacob Foss is awarded the Medal of Honor at the White House by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on May 18, 1943. Washington, D. C.: Captain Joseph J. Foss, U. S. Marine receives the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Roosevelt for his outstanding heroism as a flyer in the Pacific area where he knocked 27 Jap planes out of the sky. Left to right, Mrs. Mary Foss, mother of the Captain, Capt. Foss and his wife.
