Double Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient 

Lieutenant Commander John McCloy, US Navy

Born in Bewster, New York, on January 3, 1876, he is one of the rare American servicemembers to have received two (2) Medals of Honor for separate actions.

He was awarded the first Medal while serving as a Chief, USN, during the Boxer Rebellion in China on July 13, 20, 21, and 22, 1901. He was awarded the second Medal while serving at Vera Cruz , Mexico, April 22, 1914.

Immediately after World War I, he commanded minesweeper CURLEW clearing the mines of the North Sea mine barrage. For this work he was decorated with the Navy Cross. He retired from active duty, as lieutenant, 15 October 1928 and on 23 February 1942 was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, retired.

He died in Leonia, New Jersey, on May 24, 1945 and was buried in Section 8 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Sarah Frances McCloy (1876-1942), is buried with him.

Citation: In action with the relief expedition of the Allied forces in China, 13, 20, 21, and 22 June 1900. During this period and in the presence of the enemy, Coxswain McCloy distinguished himself by meritorious conduct.

Rank and organization: Chief Boatswain, U.S. Navy. Born: 3 January 1876, Brewster, N.Y. Accredited to: New York. G.O. No.: 177, 4 December 1915. Other Navy awards: Second Medal of Honor, Navy Cross. Citation: For heroism in leading 3 picket launches along Vera Cruz sea front, drawing Mexican fire and enabling cruisers to save our men on shore, 22 April 1914. Though wounded, he gallantly remained at his post.

USS McCLOY was the second and final ship in the BRONSTEIN - class. Commissioned as a destroyer escort, the McCLOY was redesignated as frigate on June 30, 1975. Decommissioned on December 14, 1990, and stricken from the Navy list on October 4, 1991, the McCLOY was sold to Mexico on November 12, 1993, where she was recommissioned as NICOLAS BRAVO.
