Congressional Medal of Honor - Military Medals
The first authorized U.S. military decoration was established by Gen. George Washington August 7, 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit. The badge consisted of a heart-shaped piece of cloth, and was intended for award to servicemen who showed extraordinary fidelity and gallantry. History can account for the award of only three badges before the award fell into disuse after the Revolutionary War. In 1932, Gen. Douglas MacArthur revived the Badge of Military Merit as the Purple Heart, which remains in use today. Many decorations have been established since then. The major ones are highlighted in this section, along with the criteria for eligibility.
